# Prison Legacy > Prison Legacy is the official remaster of La Prisión, the first Spanish MMORPG, originally developed by Dinamic Multimedia and launched in October 2000. The original development team is updating the underlying technology — 64-bit client and server, Vulkan instead of DirectX 7, native Windows and Linux support — while preserving the original game, its world and its mechanics. Scheduled for release in October 2026. ## What is La Prisión / Prison Legacy? La Prisión was the first Spanish MMORPG, published by Dinamic Multimedia in October 2000. The game was set inside a fictional maximum-security prison, a unique setting that set it apart from every other MMO of its era. Players took on the role of inmates who survived, fought, formed gangs, traded, and built communities within the prison world. The game ran on low-spec hardware of the time (Windows 98/XP, dial-up modems) and had a strong community that kept it alive until the servers were shut down in 2018. Prison Legacy is the official remaster of La Prisión, produced by the original development team. It is not a remake nor a fan project: the world, the mechanics, the universe and the original game logic are preserved. What has been rewritten are the underlying technology layers that no longer run on modern hardware — primarily the client and server moved from 32-bit to 64-bit, and the graphics pipeline migrated from DirectX 7 to Vulkan. The rest of the original game is being kept intact and modernised where needed. ## Technical details - Client and server rewritten to 64-bit architecture (the original was 32-bit) - Graphics API migrated from DirectX 7 to Vulkan (cross-platform, modern GPU pipeline) - Native support for Windows and Linux - Improved multiboxing (running multiple game clients simultaneously) - The full original game universe, world and mechanics preserved; only the technology stack has been modernised ## Publisher and developer The game is published and developed by DESCARGAS DIGITALES, S.L., a Spanish company registered in the Mercantile Registry of Madrid. VAT ID: ESB84635747. Address: Avda. Reina Victoria, 25–1ºA, Madrid, Spain. Development team: Toni Pomar "Sobakus", Juan Gabriel Covas "SoNNy", Miguel A. Carillo "Zeen", Iria Rodríguez (Reina). ## Release - Launch date: October 2026 (26th anniversary of the original La Prisión) - The game will be playable in both Spanish and English for the first time - A closed beta will precede launch; sign-ups available at prisonlegacy.com ## History and context - October 2000: La Prisión launched by Dinamic Multimedia — Spain's first MMORPG - 2000–2018: Community-sustained live service, spanning nearly two decades - 2018: Original servers shut down - 2018–present: Multiple community fan projects attempted to recreate the game (IMPRISONED using Unreal Engine 5 is the most notable; the Prison Legacy team observes these projects with respect) - 2026: Prison Legacy launches — official remaster by the original team ## Frequently asked questions **What is Prison Legacy?** The official remaster of La Prisión, the cult MMO launched by Dinamic Multimedia in 2000 set inside a maximum-security prison.
